Hi reader,
The challenges of decoupling are enormous considering the observable fact that we are dealing with wicked challenges if the goal is the 4th industrial revolution for most people. The wicked challenge of coming down from a metaphorical Upium drug relationship in fueling our prosperity with combustion energy and transforming our energy mix by finding a different relationship with the planet. Therefore, to decouple GDP from environmental devolution is impossible, it only can be migitated from here on forward for the upcoming few hundred years. The economy can not grow without damaging the environment somehow in our current economic models of representing nature. Perhaps general AI can come up with policies that is simoustanely ensuring a degrowth Policy so efficient it will also enable as many opportunities as possible for the greater public.
This has to do with the excruciating effects of competition, entities like companies have upon each other. To maximise profits incentives, the policy of cheapness in the value creation process, hence the reason why plastics are so popular. Plastics are cheap and easy to work with for many applications and can minimise costs greatly from an economic standpoint. Environmentally speaking we are all having a credit card worth of microplastics floating through our own biology. Thereby stating, that with contemporary developments in the world disrupting global supply chains, the already unfair competition with all sorts of negative externalities will result in a chaotic prospect that from my perspective can only be seen as unacceptable by the people. It basically comes down to the question what kind of environment you wanna live in and what luxury you’re willing to give up for basic health levels.
Therefore, one can see the formation of more grassroots developments in trying to tackle challenges described above. How do you decouple GDP and happiness, for example? Would you still be able to be happy if you were laid off recently by some big tech firm? Thereby saying, there are environmental consequences either to suffer from as a collective nor to pay the prize in transforming our economic models in representing nature better. So the basic challenge remains how to represent nature well instead of remaining lazy and short sighted in only using it for a double entry bookkeeping account as a input resulting in economic outputs.
One can make perhaps 4 distinctions of disciplines in how prosperity, wealth (GDP) and other things are interlinked;
- socio-economical; you might be higher on the bell curve making you able to earn more on average, IQ sells
- psychological; when one feels abundant or not
- Political; you can feel poorly divided under faulty politics
- ,cultural; rich dad poor dad, you would feel poor under the umbrella of a rich dad
So then the challenge is in what proportion the above is unfair or create unequal playing fields within the field of power we operate in as social agents according to Pierre Bourdieux. What habitus do we navigate by with hexis or embodied knowledge we need to generate that wealth?
