Dear reader,

In this evenings retirement I would like to share some perspectives on ‘the pursuit of freedom’.

Freedom is one of these words that is too abstract and diverse in meaning to define in one sentence. Freedom can be sought in many different outlets. The freedom of speech, emotional expression, sexuality, movement, attachment and finally in realizing that everything can be possible. So what one can fathom with the mind one can achieve (Napoleon Hill) So freedom, in and of itself, is difficult to define, and I would not dare to give a definite refinement towards a concept like that of freedom. This is due to the simple fact that there are certain thermodynamic boundaries of which some are hard or maybe impossible to break.

Pursuing freedom is having the courage and will power to detach oneself from the glamour of daily life and to choose ones own individual preferences. It is a double-edged sword in a way that desire in and of itself can create entrapment, but that it is also necessary in order to experience freedom fully. without certain limitations there would not be the experience of being free in the sense that once can create more freedoms in ones life by conscious effort. So without executing our own free will power, we remain enslaved to those of others, but simultaneously, by executing them we can also become overly attached to what we pursue.

It is in this subtle practice of surrendered action or detached longing that we experience unlimited potentiality in my opinion. This is due to the fact that I am not an ascetic, nor do I want to be. The point I am trying to make is that there is that subtle middle path by which one can navigate their lives around with more adeptness of this dance of life when practice makes ‘perfect’. Being free of attachment and free of limitation at the same time, is one of the great ecstasies the soul can experience in my opinion. Considering our essentials first, we can better determine our desired path of freedom in each one of us.

In this way we can experience a materialistic and spiritualistic freedom all at once. This for me is being the master of two worlds, the arcane and mundane all playing it’s dance at once.

Cheers,

Kees
